Urban surface design
Designing surface water runoff in urban environments
Landscape, parks + amenity
An increasingly sensitive and important area for the urban environment is the “green space”, which is in many ways a foundational part of green infrastructure (GI). Green space provides a break from the prevailing hardscape that is prevalent in urban environments and has become an essential element of public health policy.
Urban parks and the wider elements of green infrastructure are crucial to maintaining a sustainable urban ecology. They also have a valuable role in providing in stormwater runoff infiltration. Despite all the obvious benefits of urban parks, they exist in an environment of severe pressure from relentless development. In many cities, the parks have become multifunctional landscapes providing facilities for sport, relaxation, meeting places, amenities and commercial enterprise. They also need to meet the legislative requirements for access.
The challenge, then, is to design in a way that weaves together the needs of wildlife with the needs of people. ACO’s range of drainage products can help create integrated solutions in parks and landscaped environments, while the ACO Wildlife product range includes products such as the Wildlife Refuge, which is specifically designed to help provide shelter for different types of small animal.

Our Design Team
Collaboration is very much a part of ACO’s way of working. For over 50 years we have been offering creative design solutions to all sectors of government, public and private enterprise and have a track record for development and regeneration informed by community aspirations and environmental context. Our in house design team and our external design engineers have excellent technical understanding of interconnected systems that can help you create sustainable drainage solutions in all categories of the urban environment.
Tools to support you
We also offer software for design surface to assist you in making your own calculations, as well as design visualisers to assist in helping assess impact of various grating/inlet details. BIM product files along with a variety of other support documents are all available for download here.
